Dinner and a Movie

Why go to an over-priced, over-air conditioned movie when you have all these fun options???
  • AVAM’s Flicks on the Hill: sit on Federal Hill Thursday nights with a picnic dinner and free give-aways (for “E.T.” they handed out Reece’s Pieces-how cute!). Movies are all inspired by the theme of the current show “Home & Beast.” The museum is free and open to the public from 5-9pm on movie nights (movies start at 9pm). TONIGHT make “visionary beasts” (free!) in the classroom pre- “Edward Scissorhands.” [On deck: “The Freshman” (Aug 2), “Field of Dreams” (Aug 9)].

  • Little Italy’s Open-Air Friday night movies take place in the heart of Baltimore’s Little Italy. Bring a folding chair and a picnic dinner (or pick up something in town), just be sure to save room for a cannoli or two from Vaccaro’s– it’s worth the wait. [On deck: “American Graffiti” (July 27), “For Your Consideration” (Aug 3), “Envy” (Aug 10), “50 First Dates” (Aug 17), “Come September” (Aug 24), “Rocky Balboa” (Aug 31)].
  • Hopkin’s Summer Outdoor Films on the Homewood campus are serenaded pre-show with live music Fridays throughout the summer. [On deck: “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (July 27)].
  • Mount Vernon’s Outdoor Movies are Wednesday’s throughout the summer in the East Park of the Monument (near the Peabody). [On deck: “Singing in the Rain” (Aug 8), “West Side Story” (Aug 22)].
  • Bring a blanket or beach chair, sip some wine, and enjoy a movie outside under the stars at Basignani Winery’s TGIF Movie Night. $8 includes the movie, wine tasting & free popcorn. Reservations requested. [On deck: “Strictly Ballroom” (Aug 3), “Moonstruck” (Aug 24)].

  • Travel back in time and check out Bengie’s Drive-In, which has been around for over 50 years and sports the largest screen on the east coast. [Now showing: “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Live Free or Die Hard”].
  • And if you find yourself looking for a Drive-In in Los Angeles anytime soon, Vineland Drive-In is the place for you (look for the swap meet too). Tune your car radio to the designated station, and enjoy the show!
