Home-grown Designer
There is so much negative press regarding Baltimore (ie. homicide rate), it was nice boost to see Baltimore given well-deserved attention in this month’s House & Garden magazine: Insider Guide to Baltimore with Ellen Lupton. I loved the tagline of the article “Charm City, where elegance and eccentricity go hand in hand.” While you’ll have to pick up your own copy to read the full article, I am happy to report that Ellen and I share some of the same favorites: American Visionary Art Museum, shopping on “The Avenue” (36th Street) in Hampden, brunch at Miss Shirley’s (I’m a huge fan of the eggs benedict on fried green tomatoes with jumbo lump crab meat) and dinner & a movie at Tapas Teatro and The Charles.

Ellen Lupton is a graphic designer (AIGA 2007 Medalist), curator (Cooper-Hewitt in NYC), author (in colloboration with her MFA students at MICA- she’s the director), and over all wonder woman (oh, and on top it all she’s married to Abbott Miller). I’m a huge fan of her books which seek to make design accessible to everybody (including designers – check the links above for websites devoted to the books – but read the controversy on the DIY debate here). Seems like Ellen is everywhere these days. And if I haven’t linked you out with this post so far, check out her blog and stay tuned for a little Ellen inspired project in action tomorrow.
