I think I first fell in love with Europe when I realized the arts were part of culture and something that was truly to be enjoyed by all. When I was studying art history in college, people in America would always ask the question “Why?!?!? What are you going to do with THAT??? Teach?” Meanwhile, in Paris, it was more of a “that’s great, what wonderful things are going going to do with that?” response. So it was lovely to see the Festival of Lights – an ephemeral bit of culture supported by the State – taking place during my visit to Berlin (very Nuit Blanche-esque in that respect). I think the closest we’ll get in Baltimore is The Great Halloween Lantern Parade in Patterson Park. Check it out this Saturday, Oct 27th. Still pretty damn cool. [More info here].
