Pirates & Superheros
Last spring when I was in New York, I had to stop by the Superhero Supply Company in Park Slope. Not that I was in the market for the latest and greatest in superhero gear, but I had to see what this place was all about. While what I saw was a store full of typographic wonderment [see awesome sign*] and fantastically clever package design, others may appreciate it for the super-gear. However, in reality the storefront shop is a cover (there’s even a secret bookshelf entrance) for a fantastic non-profit – 826NYC – working with 6 to 18 year olds to develop their creative writing skills and help with homework (check out this post for an insider look). Definitely a great way to make learning fun. . . I think I’ll have to add the West Coast** Pirate Supply Store [w/ 826Valencia] to my SF List of things to do.
* check out the slideshow in this NY Magazine feature
** there is a national network of 826 locations around the country if you’re interested in volunteering

I lived in NYC for a while and never made it over to the superhero store, but I loved the Pirate supply store when I was in SF for a few months. Dave Eggers, is there anything you can’t do?

Very cool. I may have to get my butt on the F train to Park Slope.
