Postcard Art
Two years ago for my friend Caitlin’s birthday (she happens to share her birthday with our nation) our celebration began with mango margaritas (yum!) and a trip to the then newly opened National Portrait Gallery on the 4th. I was very impressed by the gallery, but the thing I was most impressed by were the paintings by William Wegman. Known for his [Weimaraner] dog-wearing costume photographs, I was quite surprised to see these large scale works that start with a few old postcards and the world around it is painted in. Often the postcards used as starting points have nothing to do with each other, making for an interesting composition and subject. See more of his work here (dogs under “photographs,” postcard art under “paintings”). {Happy early birthday, Caitlin S!}
