Eye on G10
As soon as everyone and their brother starting carrying cameras, I started taking photography less seriously than I used to. For the last few years I’ve been shooting entirely with a point and shoot camera. A year and a half ago I fell pawn to the cute salesman at the camera store who convinced me to switch from Canon (I’m a huge fan of the Elph PowerShot point and shoots and it’s what I’ve been recommending to everyone who has asking for camera advice lately) to a Nikon coolpix. I’ve been highly disappointed with my purchase for it’s lens distortion, long lag time, the way the large viewing screen eats through batteries (sure I saved on the camera, but I paid more by having to purchase a 3rd battery to make it through a day of my travels), the bulky battery charger and the fact that the body is now held together by clear packing tape. I do love the small, compactness of point & shoots (and can still keep using it, because despite looking rough, it still works), I think I’m looking for something more – a step up from a true point & shoot, but not quite as fancy as a dSLR. Ironically, it was through my new BOARDING PASS column that I got the idea about the Canon G series – thanks to Annamatic and Jaime Sinz, who both use the camera (see their responses here and here). I’ve always admired the photographs that both of them take, so I started looking into the camera. I think I’m going to go check out the G10 at the camera store this weekend, but I thought I’d open it up and see if anyone has any thoughts on the situation.

I have used both the G7 and G9 and absolutely love them…all have a 400D but even when I don’t have it, I am content to only have the G series because it is that good. Ironically, those were both other people’s cameras and was recently given a Panasonic DMC-LX3 which is apparently the running mate to the G10. I like that it is smaller than the G Series (they are chunkier than the Elph for sure) and it takes gorgeous pictures with a lot of manual settings but the G’s are sort kinda magical.

I have the G9 and am very happy with it. It is the perfect “can carry at all times” camera for when I am not lugging my DSLR and lenses. It also fits the bill for the bridge between point and shoot and a DSLR. The image quality is great, but of course not that of a DSLR. I had planned to buy a point and shoot for my non-professional photography to carry at all times but couldn’t resist the G9. It’s a big step up from the average high end point and shoot. You can do a lot more with it and it feels substantial in the hands.

I have been thinking about upgrading too, so this is a great post…I will be following along. Such a great series of posts lately…I really like the Bording Pass column. Cheers, J.

I have used my Father in-laws g10 and it’s really nice.
The manual image controls are really intuitive and their settings are reflected in the viewfinder and screen … very useful.

I’d consider getting a cheaper SLR from Nikon or Canon. The price jump from the G10 isn’t that big for the increase in flexibility, battery life, and image quality. You get used to lugging around the extra size after a while. The g10 takes good photos through, just not SLR good.

My first time here and I was glad to see you’re debating on the G10 – I just purchased one a month ago on the same reason as you: wanting to step up from the basic point-and-shoot, but not totally ready for the monetary commitment or learning curve of a true SLR. I took it on a trip to Argentina and couldn’t have been more satisfied, the weight of it disappeared as soon as I took my first picture with it – totally worth it. And as Curt said earlier, the settings are pretty intuitive, but more importantly, are reflected on viewfinder and screen so you can see what you’ll actually get.

I keep lusting over the G series. I have a DSLR that I love, but I sometimes feel like a sherpa lugging it and all the lenses around. Hopefully a G10 is also in my future. :-)
P.S. I found your blog via swissmiss. Good to find more baltimore people here on the intarweb.

I just bought one myself, and while it takes fab pics, my viewfinder cracked between the guy packing it away at the camera store and me getting it back to the hotel, and I’ve had it only a week and there are further scratches! I will definitely be going to Canon about it! Grrr…

that’s a very good point, nik, but i just don’t think i’d get as much use out of an SLR. i’m kind of mean to my cameras and need something that is easier to throw into my bag (i already carry too much crap). but the price point is so similar these days…
great feedback all :)

p.s. lara – exchange it now before it’s too late!!! maybe you just got a lemon ;)

I think Nik’s just jealous that I don’t have to lug around the big bag that he does!! And I am with you, I abuse my G9 pretty harshly, and have been pleased that it has held up like a dream. The fact that it takes video has been great as well. I can get a decent 15 minute video on a 2G memory card, which is pretty good.
