Boarding Pass – Katrina James
When documentary and travel photographer Katrina James first sent me the link to her site, I was instantly struck by her ability to capture people and the human spirit. These were people living their every day lives, and these really mundane moments come alive. Katrina is currently in South Africa and to get in under the skin of the city her activities have included spending the day with Felix, a car park attendant. (I love that this is an activity no guide book would ever tell you to do). There are many more wonderful moments she’s captured, so check it out for yourself! Thanks, Katrina! –Anne
next trip on deck:
I am going to hang out with a very good friend in Amsterdam, the a quick trip to Prague and I will be headed back to Sydney for a visit at the end of the year.
Aranyosapati A village in Hungary
one place you would go back to again and again:
BERLIN I love that city so much I sometimes refer to it as my boyfriend (I know that makes me sound crazy).
At a Wedding in Poland where the groom had to identify his bride while blind folded.
place you’d most likely recommend a friend go visit:
I would recommend visiting the places that really pull you in, don’t go somewhere or do something just because its on the tourist trail listen to you instincts and follow them.
Inside an MBT in Cape Town.
preferred method of transportation:
Whatever the locals are taking, here in South Africa they have these mini bus taxis which I like to refer to MBT’s. I am so thankful I reach my destination each time I catch one of these you never know what you are in for which makes for an entertaining ride.
On the 13 hour train ride to Budapest.
place you’ve never been but dying to go:
I would love to go to Detroit, I have been there but just for enough time to get a photo in front of an 8 Mile rd sign. I would love to back to explore the city with my camera.
The stunning view after climbing Table Mountain Cape Town.
most memorable trip in 2 sentences or less:
Traveling central Australia with my parents when I was 14. The first night we camped in the middle of nowhere was magic I have never seen so many stars in my life, sitting around the camp fire and having a sing a long is one of the best memories I have, I get a bit teary thinking of it.
Fishing in Aranyosapati
how do you prepare for a trip?
Check to make sure I have my camera gear packed the throw a few things in a suitcase, which always includes something outrageous because I think I will use it. (This trip was an apron which I did actually wear for a dress up party).
Me wearing the apron I packed for a gay party themed “Maid in China” in Cape Town.
what’s in your “designer travel kit” ?
I am pretty no frills in the travel department. Camera, Mp3 player, laptop, I do like to always have nail polish the ultimate accessory.
Graffiti in Woodstock, Cape Town
Ernesto Neto exhibition London
favorite souvenir/thing to bring back?
I love collecting things from markets or things that just come to me, so far on this trip I found some beautiful passport photos that were being blown around by the wind, I am going to get them framed. I also found a book of old church hymns.
