To Becky Cooper, maps are more about their makers than the places they describe. As a personal art project she passed out hundreds of blank maps of Manhattan asking people to share their Manhattan and map their memories. The book, Mapping Manhattan, features 75 of these so called “love letters” from every day people to Vahram Muratyan (of Paris vs NYC) and Malcom Gladwell, and there’s even a blank map in the back of the book for you to fill in and mail to Becky’s P.O. Box (or download one from her site). Despite never been a New Yorker myself, I still enjoyed the project and seeing the moments and places that stuck in people’s memories.
I love the cover in particular – it’s slightly in raised relief giving it a polished, sophisticated quality (ahem, makes a great gift!). In addition to the maps inside, there’s a forward by Adam Gopnik (From Paris to the Moon, and writer for the New Yorker), and charming illustrations of the city by Bonnie Briant.
